Wildcats advance to W-League Final
Season champ New Jersey tops host Ottawa 2-1
Saturday, August 7, 2004
OTTAWA, ON -- The New Jersey Wildcats defeated the Ottawa Fury in the second semifinal Saturday evening by a score of 2-1 at the W-League Championship tournament in Ottawa, Ontario.  Like the Whitecaps in the first semifinal, the Wildcats never trailed in the match as they built a 2-0 lead and held on as the Fury battled back to within a goal.

A 32nd minute red card to Ottawa Fury defender Diana Matheson and the ensuing penalty kick were the story of the first half as the Wildcats went into the half with a 1-0 lead.  W-League Goalkeeper of the Year Leisha Alcia made several amazing saves throughout the half but couldnít stop Marinette Pichonís penalty kick in the 35th minute after Matheson was sent off for a handball on the line.

New Jersey outshot the Fury 8-0 in the half.  Action was end-to-end but the Wildcats had the more dangerous chances and cross after cross found itís way into the penalty area.

First, Anne Makinenís free kick found Janine Willis at the far post but her header is tipped over the bar by Alcia.  Then in the 32nd minute, Kim Francis took a close-range shot but Alcia dove back and to her left to make the initial save.

The second half was back and forth as both teams had quality shots on goal.  In the 49th minute, Pichon was sent in alone on Alcia on a pass by Makoski but Alcia came off her line to block the French internationals shot.  Then, off a corner kick by Rhian Wilkinson in the 54th minute, Erin Ramsey skied over the defense to head a shot on goal but Janine Willis was just in front of the line to clear the ball out of danger.

In the 68th minute the Wildcats doubled their lead when Manya Makoski threaded a ball through the Fury defense to Pichon who turned on her defender and took a left-footed shot from 15 yards out that beat Alcia to the far post.

With the Wildcats sitting on a 2-0 lead, the Fury continue to attack and were rewarded in the 82nd minute when Allison Kelly took the ball down to the endline after taking a touch around Brown.  Her cross was blocked out of bounds by the hand of Janine Willis and a penalty kick was awarded.  Leah Robinson calmly places the ball in the lower left corner of the goal to bring the Fury back to within one but the Fury are unable to tie the score as the Wildcats moved onto the championship match.
