HUNTINGTON, NY -- After numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game Wednesday night, fans at St. Anthony's High School were preparing for overtime. But in dramatic fashion, the Long Island Rough Riders finally broke through in the 83rd minute, defeating the visiting Boston Renegades in the Eastern Conference Divisional Round.
The first half of play belonged to the Rough Riders, who dominated possession and used their intimidating defense to build up their offensive bursts. The first scoring opportunity of the half came courtesy of Kerri McCabe, who took a pass from Kristen Habenicht down the left side in the 4th minute. With a one-v-one opportunity, McCabe took a point-blank rocket shot, which was saved by Renegades keeper Meghann Burke.
McCabe continued to frustrate the Renegades back line. In the seventh minute, Brooke DeRosa took the ball down the far touch line off a through pass from CJ Ludemann. DeRosa sent a bending ball across the box to McCabe, who controlled the cross and sent a short ball back to the cutting DeRosa. But Danielle Kot managed to get back and clear the ball out of the Boston box.
Long Island would maintain their offensive presence throughout the half, forcing Burke to step up for her team. In the 21st minute, Ludemann again sent a through ball to McCabe, whose shot was saved by Burke. Ludemann, however, would recover the rebound and attempted to cross the ball to McCabe again with no luck.
A spirited Boston side came out in the second half, looking to pick up the pace from a lackluster first half. But the Rough Riders would continue to pressure the Renegades. A free kick from Sue Weber in the 61st minute was glanced on net by McCabe, forcing Burke to make a spectacular save.
CJ Ludemann would continue to frustrate the Renegades defense. In the 69th minute, a quick spin move beat her defender and allowed her to slide a pass up to McCabe. McCabe cut the ball back, fooling her defender and giving her a look at the net. But Burke would stop McCabe before she could get a shot off, knocking her into Briana Wilson who was forced to leave the game with an injury.
Second half substitute Rebecca Kaplan came close to netting her second goal of the year in the 75th minute. A well-placed through ball from Kristen Habenicht gave Kaplan a chance to turn on net, but Burke came off her line to slide out and smother the chance.
Boston's best scoring chance came in the 78th minute. Off a Renegades corner kick, Lauren MacIver managed to find herself wide open about 20 yards out of goal, and launched a shot that forced Rough Riders goalkeeper Meghan Frey to make a tough save.
With overtime on the horizon, the Rough Riders once again gave their fans something to cheer about. In the 83rd minute, Sue Weber slid a ball up to a sprinting Brooke DeRosa. Meghann Burke, who had come off her line, tried to fall on the ball as she and DeRosa went for it at the same time, but the ball squirted under Burke and DeRosa was there to put it home for Long Island.
Wednesday's win has earned the Long Island Rough Riders an Eastern Conference Semifinal berth. They will head down to Atlanta to face the Atlanta Silverbacks this Friday, July 25th at 8PM. Fans will be able to follow the action with the USL Score Live Game Tracker, which will be available during the game.
