Germain following family footsteps

USL News Release

TAMPA – The second annual USL W-League Combine wrapped up Sunday at Ed Radice Sports Complex in Tampa, Florida with the WPS and W-League coaches making their final observations of the potential professional prospects on hand.

The first match began at 8:00 am ET with the third and final match coming to an end at 12:30 pm.

Among the players trying to make a final last impression was Washington Freedom W-League player Kimmie Germain, a midfielder who saw action in 13 games for the club last season as they posted a 12-1-1 record in the regular season and reached the W-League Final.

“I think they are looking for something special. Not everybody can be the same style player,” Germain said.

“There’s not like one mold you have to fit into, but you definitely have to set yourself apart whether that be scoring goals, or being a playmaker. You just have to play into your strengths and not try to be somebody else because that’s when you’re gonna screw up.”

It could be argued that Germain is that something special considering her lineage. Her father Kip was a professional player with the Washington Diplomats and Atlanta Chiefs of the North American Soccer League, and her mother Ann Orrison was a member of the US Women’s National Team from 1984-86. Her father and grandfather, Everett, are both members of the DC/Virginia Soccer Hall of Fame.

“Both of my parents played a pretty high level and were around the game a lot, they coached. I was always around it. They were playing, so I was hanging out at the field at 10 o’clock on a school night when I was five. So I just always loved it. I had a good opportunity to learn from my parents.”

Germain brought three years of W-League experience with her to the W-League Combine having also previously played two seasons with the Northern Virginia Majestics for a total of 16 games.

She joined the US U-23 squad for a trip to Ireland prior to her 2009 W-League season with the Freedom.
