U20 WNT player and Portland star joins Rush

Colorado Rush News Release -

Thursday, April 26, 2012

LITTLETON, Co. - University of Portland standout and U20 Women’s National Team player Kendall Johnson has commited to play with the Rush Women for the 2012 W-League season.

"Kendall is coming from a fine program and has national team and World Cup experience," Rush Women’s Head Coach Erik Bushey said. "I believe she will be a great fit here at Rush, not only on the field as a player and role model for younger players but off the field as well."

Johnson took a few minutes to share her thoughts about joining the Rush.

Rush: What are you looking forward to most with playing for the Rush Women this summer?

Johnson: "I’m really looking forward to playing competitive soccer with the Rush this summer.  It’s unfortunate that the WPS league folded, but it gives us a great opportunity to play with and against the best players in the nation.  My University of Portland teammate Dani (Foxhoven) has had great things to say about this program and I’m excited to get to know everyone.  Also, my host family just told me they have a golden retriever and a 10 week-old puppy!  I love dogs, so I have to admit this is an added bonus."

Rush: Have you played in the W-League prior to this summer?

Johnson: "This is my first time playing in the W-league.  Having grown up and played soccer in Portland, Oregon my whole life, I think this will be a great opportunity to try something new and expand and improve as a soccer player."

Rush: How was it playing with Rush alum Danielle Foxhoven? Are you keeping in touch with her while she is playing in Russia?

Johnson: "Dani is an incredible player and an all-around great person.  It’s been so amazing playing with her over the past few years.  She’s one of the best finishers I’ve ever played with and most importantly, she is always playing with a smile on her face and that’s so contagious.  I’ve gotten to chat with her a few times while she’s been in Russia and she has some pretty crazy stories.  She will come away with a great experience playing abroad as she has such a positive attitude about everything."

Rush: Briefly describe your time playing with the U20 National team.

Johnson: "I played with the U20 national team during the 2010 World Cup in Germany. As a young soccer player, you dream about representing your country.  And to actually travel, wear the USA jersey and play on the field against different nations was unbelievable.  It was great to be able train with the top US players in my age. I also really enjoyed traveling and experiencing the culture of different countries."

Johnson and the Rush Women begin the 2012 season on the road at Vancouver Whitecaps on May 18. Rush play at the Victoria Highlanders two days later before returning to Colorado for the home opener on May 24 against Victoria at Valor Christian High School at 7:30 p.m.
