BRANDON, Fla. – The VSI Tampa Flames and the Central SC Cobras tied a hard-fought match on Sunday evening, securing the Flames' first point of the season after a 3-0 lost to the Charlotte Lady Eagles in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday night.
The match was evenly contested for the first 15 minutes as each team tried to establish its rhythm. The Flames scored the first goal of the evening in the 17th minute on a great effort by Markysha Boyce, but the Cobras were able to equalize the game before halftime with a goal from Debbie Smith in the 30th minute.
Each team looked to take the lead before halftime, but neither was successful and the teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
The Flames and the Cobras came out strong after the break as each team was looking to take the lead. At the 22-minute mark of the second half the Cobras were able to convert one of their chances into a goal, scored by Cally Morril.
It looked like the Cobras were going to walk away with a 2-1 victory and pick up three points on the road, but in the 89th minute Cassie Barbaresi hit a shot from outside the 18-yard box that was saved by the goalkeeper, but the rebound came back to her feet where she was able to put away the second chance for the game-tying goal.
Next the Flames hit the road to face the defending W-League champions, the Atlanta Silverbacks, on Friday May 25 at 7 p.m. They return home for home games vs. the Charlotte Eagles on June 6 and June 7. Kickoff for both games is set for 7 p.m. at J.C. Handly Park. For more information and to order tickets visit www.vsi-flames.com.
