SANTA CLARITA, CA - The Sounders Women started the first leg of a three game road trip with a victory against the Santa Clarita Blue Heat on Wednesday night. A 38th minute goal for Lyndsey Patterson turned out to be the game winner.
The Sounders created numerous chances throughout the the first half, hitting the bar and forcing multiple saves from Cynthia Jacobo. Megan Manthey skimmed a shot off the top of the bar, and Sophie Reiser launched a long shot that was barely palmed over the crossbar.
After the Blue Heat hit back, forcing Megan Kufeld into action for the Sounders, it was Seattle who broke the deadlock. Veronica Perez passed a ball onto the right wing for Lyndsey Patterson who went one on one with the Santa Clarita left back. Patterson shifted the ball in, then out, and launched a square shot at the far upper corner. The shot knuckled past the outstretched goalkeeper for the match winner.
Patterson’s goal is her fourth goal of the year to add to her three assists.
In the second half, Megan Lindsay hit the upright on a quick shot, but the chances were few for each team. The final chance of the half fell to Edite Fernandes, Santa Clarita’s star forward. She wiggled between two defenders in the box, but Kelli Smith shadowed every move and blocked the shot until second half goalkeeper substitute Katie Hultin scooped up the ball.
The Sounders’ win gives them 28 points from 12 games played. The next match is on Friday against the LA Strikers at 7 p.m. PST. Radio coverage of the match starts at 6:45pm on 1150 AM, and on 1150KKNW.com.
