LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Strikers announced that 2012 team captain Vanessa Valentine has retired and will take over the role of general manager for the W-League team. Valentine replaces Rebecca Neuren, who has taken a position with the LA Galaxy of MLS.
Valentine has been a part of the Strikers since the club’s inception in 2011, playing a key role on the Strikers’ back line in 2011 and returning as the team captain in 2012. She boasts a full resume of coaching experience and numerous NCAA and W-League honors. She takes over after an eventful 2012 season that saw the club gain positive momentum, setting attendance records and launching several new programs for youth and fan involvement.
Valentine grew up in San Diego, where she played for La Costa High School and the San Diego Surf. She graduated from Cal State Fullerton, where she led the defense as a four-time All Big West Conference selection. She began coaching during college and has a diverse background, having coached from the U7 age group up to the collegiate level.
Valentine made her W-League debut in 2010 with Strikers, appearing in six games for the expansion side. In 2012 she appeared in 12 matches, logging 993 minutes and scoring a goal.
