Pfeiffer University coach brings wealth of experience to club

Fredericksburg Impact News Release -

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

The Fredericksburg Area Soccer Association is proud to announce Rich Stoneman as the new head coach of the Fredericksburg Impact for the 2013 USL W-League season.

An assistant coach with the women’s soccer team at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C., Stoneman carries an impressive resume with a long history of elite player development as he prepares to lead a W-League side for the first time. He succeeds the departing Jen Woodie, the Impact’s first-ever head coach.

"We’re delighted to welcome Coach Stoneman to our club," said FASA General Manager Pete Cinalli, who will continue to serve as the Impact’s assistant coach. "Our W-League program has made dramatic strides over its first two seasons of existence and he is the perfect person to lead the Impact to the next level.

"FASA is also very thankful to Jen Woodie for her instrumental role in leading the team over the past two years."

During a lengthy coaching career including stints at East Carolina University, Louisiana Tech, Baylor University, national youth powerhouse Dallas Texans SC and the North Texas Olympic Development Program, Stoneman has helped dozens of players prepare to compete at the next level, whether it be college, professional or international play.

"I’m very excited - when this opportunity came up, it was one I really wanted to take," Stoneman said. "To be able to work with Pete and FASA is a great opportunity for me and my career, and I look forward to helping better the team.

"I’ve had a lot of experience in the college ranks, helped players turn pro on both the men’s and women’s side, and have helped others play overseas as well."

Stoneman was a standout during his own NCAA career at Oklahoma Christian University, and subsequently played professionally in Major League Soccer and USL, then known as the USISL. He holds an NSCAA Level II Goalkeeping Diploma, an Advanced National Diploma, National A and B licenses from the U.S. Soccer Federation, an English F.A. Premier Badge and an NSCAA Premier Diploma. Both Pfeiffer and East Carolina allowed an average of less than one goal a game under his tutelage.

Having recruited several FASA products to Pfeiffer and East Carolina, Stoneman is already familiar with the club and a homestay is being arranged so that he can live in the community during the W-League season, which runs from May through July.

He will look to maintain the Impact’s steady improvement in the W-League’s Atlantic division, where Fredericksburg finished in third place last season with a 6-4-2 record after a 2-7-1 mark in their inaugural 2011 campaign. The Impact also won the 2012 Commonwealth Cup, awarded to the top W-League team in the state of Virginia, and narrowly missed out on a playoff berth.

"FASA does a great job of preparing their players for the next level. They’re good, hard-working players," said Stoneman, who is eager to work with the Impact’s college-age talent as well as those who have completed their NCAA careers.

"The players that graduated are going to come in and contribute right away, and those that are still in college know they’re going to get a lot of experience, a lot of exposure to playing at the next level, and that’s going to benefit them when they return to their college teams."

Stoneman and his staff have already begun preparing for the coming season and will a nnounce player signings in the coming weeks. The Impact’s 2013 schedule will be released early in the new year; check the team’s website,, for more information.
