Sounders Women add Ambrose, Rayfield
Pair of defenders signed for 2013

Seattle Sounders Women News Release -

Thursday, April 25, 2013

TUKWILA, Wash. – The Sounders Women have announced the signing of Canadian U-20 National Team defender Nikki Ambrose and Oregon State defender Laura Rayfield for the 2013 W-League season. Ambrose recently finished her red-shirt sophomore season with Santa Clara.

“We are pleased to add these two top collegians to our group this year. Nikki and Laura both have a great attitude and work ethic,” Sounders Women Head Coach and GM Hubert Busby Jr. said.

Ambrose, 20, played nine matches in 2012 after redshirting during the 2011 season. Her Santa Clara Broncos finished third in the competitive West Coast Conference and lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to eventual Final Four side, Stanford. Ambrose has been involved with the Canadian Youth National Team program including her selection to the U-20 side in preparation for the 2011 CONCACAF Championship.

“Nikki is an intense competitor,” Busby said. “She’s very coachable, and is a player that looks to improve her craft on a daily basis. Her positive attitude will also be beneficial to the group.”

Rayfield, 19, played 90 minutes in an exhibition against the Sounders Women on April 14 and helped solidify an Oregon State shutout. During her freshman season at OSU, Rayfield played in 15 matches and helped the Beavers to a stingy 1.25 goals-against average. She is a Kentlake High School graduate, where she was selected two-time Conference Player of the Year.

“As a club, we are always looking for players who epitomize what it means to be a Sounder. In the game against us this year, Laura showed tremendous grit, passion, and was technically sound for the duration of the match,” Busby said.

With both Ambrose and Rayfield still being underclassmen, their futures - as well as that of the Sounders Women - look bright.

“The addition of these two bright young players adds to the depth of our squad," Busby said. "I have no doubt our environment will assist them in their development, thus allowing for them to go back to their respective schools as impact players.”

The Sounders Women play their second preseason match on April 26 against Seattle University. Single-match tickets are currently on sale on
