TUKWILA, Wash. – The Sounders Women return to action this weekend as they travel to Colorado for matches against the Colorado Rapids Women on Friday and the Colorado Rush on Sunday.
The Sounders returned on Sunday from a busy week in California, proving they are a very capable road team. They took home seven of nine possible points, winning their first two matches against the LA Strikers and Santa Clarita Blue Heat and finishing with a tie against the Pali Blues, who trail the Sounders in league standings by a single point.
The Sounders Women are currently in first place in the Western Conference, starting off strong with an undefeated 3-0-2 record. Scoring 10 goals so far, the Sounders have had nine different goal-scorers. They are led by forward Sara Campbell, who has recorded two goals and an assist, and forward Melissa Busque, who has notched a goal and an assist and was recently called up to the Canadian Women’s National Team.
The Rapids currently sit in fifth place in the Western Conference with a 1-2-1 record. After a win against the Rush to start the season, the Rapids played through a difficult stretch in California. The trip began with a tough 4-0 loss against the Pali Blues. They responded well and seemed to be in control against the LA Strikers after going up 2-0, but gave up the lead and ended up losing 3-2. The Rapids were able to earn a point against the Blue Heat in a 2-2 match.
The road trip comes at a difficult time for the Sounders Women as they will be without Busque, Jenna Richardson, and five University of Washington players. Busque is in Germany with the Canadian National Team, while Richardson is still finishing up school at Oregon State and the UW crew is in Italy.
The Rush currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference but have only played three games. Following their loss against the Rapids, the Rush battled to a 2-2 draw at Starfire Sports Stadium against the Sounders, and secured a 1-1 result against the Bay Area Breeze. They are led by forward Danica Evans, who has recorded four goals this season.
Two Sounders will be playing in front of family and friends while the team is in Colorado. Jaelene Hinkle and Janine Beckie are both natives of Colorado.
Both matches will be broadcast live on 1150 KKNW AM Radio, with commentary from sportscaster Jon Billings or online at www.1150kknw.com, where the broadcasts will also be available for replay.
