TAMPA, Fla. –
A pair of 2013 W-League standouts swept Horizon League honors this week after Fredericksburg Impact forward Chelsey Haney was chosen Offensive Player of the Week and Dayton Dutch Lions goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Haney, a Youngstown State junior forward, scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win against Green Bay on Saturday. Haney capitalized on a breakaway with the score tied at 1-1 early in the second half for her second game-winner this year.
Wright State senior McCurdy was honored for the second consecutive week after leading the Raiders to their second consecutive win. She recorded six saves, including five in the second half, as the Raiders held on for a 2-1 win against Oakland. McCurdy played a role offensively as well as she tallied her first career goal to open the scoring. McCurdy’s free kick from just inside the midfield line eluded the Oakland defense and went into the goal to give WSU a 1-0 lead 12:36 into the match.
Carolina Elite Cobras forward Stephanie DeVita
was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week
after the reigning SoCon Player of the Year tallied four points last week to help Furman to a pair of league wins and sole possession of first place in the conference standings. With nine goals and five assists this season, DeVita leads the SoCon with 23 points.
DeVita’s Cobras teammate Krystyna Freda
, who led the team in scoring in 2012, was tabbed as Big South Attacking Player of the Week
after she scored three goals and dished out two assists to lead Winthrop to a pair of Big South wins last week. She got her week started with two goals in a 2-1 win at High Point, and three days later at VMI Freda was in on three of Winthrop’s four markers with a goal and two assists in a 4-0 win. It was her second Big South Attacking Player of the Week nod this season.
Toronto Lady Lynx midfielder Ashley Lawrence
was honored by the Big 12 Conference, being named Newcomer of the Week
after helping West Virginia to a 2-1 victory against Texas. The freshman played all 90 minutes in the game, recorded four shots and assisted on senior forward Frances Silva’s first goal. Lawrence set up the scoring play by carrying the ball across midfield before sending a cross to a streaking Silva, who beat UT goalie Abby Smith far post from 10 yards.
Washington Spirit Reserves forward Ashley Herndon
was selected as Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week
for the second time this season after the James Madison freshman scored both game-winning goals in conference road wins at Delaware (2-1) and Drexel (2-0). Herndon found the net with 41 seconds remaining in regulation against the Blue Hens and then broke a scoreless tie in the 76th minute at Drexel. Herndon leads JMU with five goals, four of which have been game-winners.
